Explanation of IPAF 3a and 3b categoriesOn this International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) operator training course you will learn how to safely select, check and operate your choice of category of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms and Scissor lifts

Our standard course covers the 3A (scissor lift) and 3B (self-propelled boom) categories. If you are unsure that these are the right categories for you, or you require training on different categories (see our IPAF categories page), please call us on 0333 666 1881.

Who should attend?

The IPAF Operator training course is ideal if you or your employees use, supervise or manage the use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms and scissor lifts.

How many per IPAF 3a 3b training course?

Single category – Maximum 6 candidates per instructor

Two categories – Maximum 4 candidates per instructor

    • MEWPs (categories)
    • Structural Parts
    • Familiarisation and Pre-use Checks
    • Platform Movement and Travel
    • Ground Conditions
    • Hazard Awareness
    • Operation
  • Theory Test (Open Book)

  • Practical Assessment
  • Course Evaluation and Log Book Completion

1-3 days training (depending on your level of experience), with a minimum of 7 hours of tuition per day.

You may need to book additional training time to ensure that you can gain adequate experience before your practical assessment.

Your instructor will advise you on the day if they feel that this is necessary.

Courses held at our Essex training centre include your IPAF registration fee, and all handouts. In addition, we provide free hot and cold drinks, a quality lunch and free parking.

Smart IPAF PAL CardWhen you've passed your theory test and practical assessment(s), you will receive a certificate of training, a ‘smart’ IPAF PAL card (both valid for 5 years), and a log book to keep a record of your operating experience.

You will need to bring suitable PPE including safety footwear, a hard hat and a hi-visibility vest or coat. You should also bring suitable outdoor clothing, depending on the weather.

Where harnesses are necessary (normally with any boom-type machine) we can either lend you one on the day, or you can buy one as part of the MEWP Operators Safety Set

If you opt to include our MEWP Operator's Safety Set when you book your course, the set will cost just £59.95 + VAT each, for equipment that is valued at £85.

PLEASE NOTE: You may be refused entry onto the course practical if you do not have the appropriate PPE

This course is run in English. If you are attending our IPAF Operator Course you must be able to read and understand safety notices, course literature, test questions and answers, verbal instructions and manufacturer’s instruction manuals.

It is possible for us run this course with an interpreter (supplied by you) - please call us on 0333 6661881 to discuss this option.

You should also be reasonably fit and in good health, with no uncorrected issues that are likely to endanger or hinder yourself, or anyone else at the training venue.
